F. sylvatica will grow into a large, vigorous deciduous tree with a broad, spreading crown. Leaves broadly elliptic, yellow-green in spring, rich russet-brown in autumn. Flowers small, green, followed by bristly fruits.
Makes an excellent hedge and will hold it's leaves in the winter although they will go brown. Can be clipped to shape.
